THE Sussexes’ return to living in the UK — with plans to enrol their children in British schools — has dragged Prince Harry and Prince William’s long-running fallout back into view.

King Charles is said to have welcomed Harry back, following a quiet reunion at Highgrove. But speculation around the family is that Prince William won’t be thrilled about his brother’s comeback.

The brothers’ relationship began to sour not long after Harry met Meghan Markle. Friction reportedly surfaced in 2018 when William advised Harry not to rush the relationship, with Harry accusing his brother of trying to derail the romance.

Tensions escalated in 2019 after the pair split their royal household and joint charity, with a confrontation at Kensington Palace. Harry later alleged in Spare that William called Meghan “difficult”, “rude”, and “abrasive” before knocking him to the floor.

The rupture became public in 2020 when Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals after the Sandringham Summit and moved to California. In the years that followed, the couple released a string of high-profile projects, including a 2021 Oprah interview alleging racism within royal ranks and that Meghan was denied mental health support — claims met by the late Queen Elizabeth II’s response that “recollections may vary.” A Netflix series in 2022 criticised palace operations, and in 2023 Spare took aim at Queen Camilla — with Harry calling her “dangerous” — and detailed rows with William and Princess Kate.

Now, with Harry and Meghan expected to be back on UK soil in private accommodation while continuing private business ventures, the family is described as split on how to handle their presence. Charles is reportedly receptive and keen to spend time with his UK-based grandchildren, while William is believed to be firmly opposed and still angry about attacks on Kate. Princess Anne and Duchess Sophie are reportedly cautious too, and may reject any “half-in, half-out” arrangement that blurs royal duty with commercial work.

Public opinion looks mixed. A recent YouGov poll put support for their return at 21%, with 33% opposed and 45% undecided — and among over-65s, 57% are against it. Meanwhile Harry continues work with UK patronages including WellChild and the Invictus Games, but royal experts say a true reconciliation may be off the table — especially with William focused on supporting Kate through her cancer recovery while also carrying duties during the King’s ongoing health battles.
