PROFESSOR T is heading back to the crime scene — with the Cambridge criminologist returning for a fifth season packed with fresh cases and, yes, more of his prickly genius.

Ben Miller’s Jasper Tempest has never been big on tact, which is exactly why the police keep calling. In season 5, he’s juggling increasingly odd investigations — including a death at a luxury spa, a murder at a charity boxing event and a serial killer who takes pleasure in taunting him — alongside a romance with Dr Helena Goldberg (Juliet Stevenson). The show began on ITV in 2021 as an adaptation of a Belgian mystery series and sits firmly in the cosy-murder lane, with a lead who’s as brilliant as he is infuriating.

If you fancy your mysteries with a missing-person hook, Gone centres on Detective Annie Cassidy (Eve Myles), who suspects Alana (Emma Appleton) hasn’t vanished by accident. The trail leads to Alana’s husband Michael Polly (David Morrissey), with Annie convinced he’s sitting on a secret.

Elsewhere, Brooke Shields plays fading novelist Allie Chandler in You’re Killing Me, who heads to a friend’s hometown after the pal is found dead and teams up with a novice podcaster (Amalia Williamson) — with Detective Jack Kerrigan (Tom Cavanaugh) in the mix.

And if you’ve got a soft spot for ecclesiastical sleuthing, Grantchester has just ended its run after launching in 2014, built around Detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and a rotating lineup of crime-solving vicars — Sidney Chambers (James Norton), then Will Davenport (Tom Brittney), then Alphy Kotterman (Rishi Nair). The first four seasons are streaming on Netflix.

For darker thrills, Unchosen dives into a tech-banning cult led by Mr Phillips (Christopher Eccleston), following Adam (Asa Butterfield) and Rosie (Molly Windsor) as Rosie begins questioning her life after a troubling incident in forbidden woods. It even hit Netflix’s streaming chart top spot in April.
