Meryl Streep Slams Marvel-Style Tropes in ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’
Key Points
MERYL Streep has taken a swipe at the superhero-style simplification of characters in today’s movies, praising the complexity of her role in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The three-time Oscar winner told Hits Radio Breakfast Show that the sequel offers a more nuanced portrayal of her iconic character, Miranda Priestly, who is far from a straightforward villain.
“I think when we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now — we got the villains and we got the good guys — and it’s so boring,” Streep said.
“What’s really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths.
“So that’s what I like about this [film]. It’s messier.”
The new film continues the story of Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, as she navigates her complex relationship with Miranda amid challenges in the publishing world.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, audiences are embracing the film, which features a star-studded cast including Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Lady Gaga.
Streep’s comments highlight a refreshing pushback against cookie-cutter storytelling, championing richer, more human characters in an era dominated by clear-cut heroes and villains.
It seems Miranda Priestly’s sharp edge still cuts through the usual Hollywood clichés.
