JEFF BEZOS and Lauren Sánchez have dropped a staggering £10 million to co-host this year’s Met Gala, cementing their place alongside Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Anna Wintour herself.

The billionaire couple will be rubbing shoulders with fashion’s elite, including close friends Kris Jenner and Corey Gamble, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s biggest night.

Sources told the New York Post’s Page Six gossip column the hefty sponsorship has earned them the coveted ‘Anna Wintour OK,’ a seal of approval from the Vogue editor who masterminds the event.

But not everyone in the fashion scene is thrilled.

One insider described the Bezoses as “bizarro royalty,” questioning whether such a pricey ticket to the gala aligns with its original spirit.

Former Vogue events planner Stephanie Winston Wolkoff shared her thoughts: “There was a time when access to spaces like the Met Gala wasn’t something you could simply obtain, it was something you grew into through your influence, your work and your impact.”

She added that the gala has shifted from a celebration of fashion’s artistry to a more transactional affair, with money playing a bigger role than ever.

Despite the mixed feelings, Bezos and Sánchez’s influence is undeniable.

They made their Met Gala debut in 2024 and have since become fixtures in the high-society circuit, even attending a White House state dinner for King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Bezos, whose fortune is estimated at over £180 billion, remains executive chairman of Amazon, the company he started in a garage in 1995.

The couple’s name is plastered across this year’s gala invites, with some sources suggesting their contribution could be as high as £20 million.

Protesters have even taken to the streets of New York, plastering “Boycott the Bezos Met Gala” posters in response to their sponsorship.

Fashion writer Amy Odell pointed out the couple’s undeniable clout: “They are part of the two per cent of fashion buyers who represent 40 per cent of luxury sales.”

This Met Gala might be the most expensive yet, but it also highlights how money continues to reshape the world of high fashion and exclusive events.
