BRITNEY Spears has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence — and those close to the pop superstar say the incident could finally be the “wake-up call” she needs.
The 44-year-old singer was taken into custody in Ventura County, California, on the night of March 4 after police reportedly received a call about a black BMW driving erratically at high speed on Interstate 101.
According to law enforcement sources, officers from the California Highway Patrol located the vehicle and pulled it over after it exited the freeway near Westlake Boulevard in Thousand Oaks. Spears was identified as the driver and allegedly “showed signs of impairment,” prompting officers to administer field sobriety tests.
She was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol and booked into Ventura County Main Jail.
Authorities say Spears was taken to a nearby hospital shortly after the stop so her blood could be drawn to determine her blood alcohol content. The visit was not related to injuries, and chemical tests are still pending.
Spears was reportedly booked around 3 a.m. and released roughly three hours later.
In a statement following the arrest, the singer’s representative admitted the situation was serious.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” the rep said. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”
Sources say the star is now feeling “very emotional and regretful” about what happened — particularly because of how it could affect her two sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
“She’s embarrassed because of how it could affect her sons,” a source said. “She loves them very much and never wants them to feel like she’s letting them down.”
Her representative confirmed that the boys will be spending time with their mother as she navigates the fallout from the arrest, adding that loved ones are working on an “overdue needed plan” to help improve her wellbeing.
The incident comes after months of concern from fans over Spears’ erratic social media activity. Shortly after news of the arrest broke, her Instagram account appeared to disappear, further fuelling speculation about the singer’s state of mind.
Spears is due to appear in court on May 4 as the investigation continues.
The arrest marks the latest chapter in a long and turbulent public history for the “Toxic” star. Spears famously spent 13 years under a court-ordered conservatorship, which ended in 2021 following a global #FreeBritney campaign.
Despite periods of stability since then, the singer has continued to face scrutiny over her personal life.
Now, those closest to her hope the DUI arrest could mark a turning point.
“Hopefully she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time,” her representative said.
