FORMER PGA Tour golfer Matt McQuillan has died aged 45, with his family sharing that he passed away in hospital on Wednesday, August 5.

An obituary said McQuillan died at KGH “surrounded by family”, adding that he was known as “Matty to most”.

The tribute described him as a “respected golfer” and a “devoted son”, as well as a “hilarious brother and friend”.

McQuillan’s death comes amid a summer of losses across sport and entertainment, with a number of notable names dying in recent weeks and months.

Among them was The Sopranos actor Vincent Pastore, who was found dead in his Bronx residence on August 1 aged 80, with police suspecting he died of natural causes. His former co-star Michael Imperioli paid tribute on Instagram, writing that he’d shared “lots of good times” and “lots of laughs” with Pastore.

Earlier, director Chuck Russell — known for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob and The Mask — died at his home in San Diego on July 22 aged 74, with a local fire department responding to a report of a medical emergency.

Earlier in the summer, music mogul Clive Davis died at 94 after a hospitalisation for an upper respiratory infection, while singer Bonnie Tyler died aged 75 in hospital in Portugal, with a statement saying she had been ill.

A number of other deaths were also reported across July and June, including actor Hal Williams (91), actress Brenda Fricker (81), and Village People lead singer Victor Willis (74).
