RACHEL Zegler is opening up about the intense reaction she faced following her casting in Disney’s live-action Snow White, sharing a candid message about identity, online hate, and staying true to herself.

In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the West Side Story star reflected on the criticism she received over her heritage and appearance, calling the experience a “really confusing time.”

Zegler, who is of Colombian and Polish descent, said she was criticised in conflicting ways throughout her rise in Hollywood.

“I was told I wasn’t enough of one thing for West Side Story and too much of another for Snow White,” she said, adding that she refuses “to assimilate for anybody else’s comfort.”

Zegler also revealed that the backlash went beyond social media commentary, saying she faced threats to her safety during the controversy. She shared that therapy has played an important role in helping her navigate the pressures of fame and public scrutiny.

The actress’s comments come after ongoing discussion surrounding Disney’s Snow White remake, which drew attention for its modernized approach, casting choices, and reported behind-the-scenes tensions.

The film, directed by Marc Webb, was surrounded by debate long before its release, with public commentary also involving co-star Gal Gadot and actor Peter Dinklage.

Despite the noise, Zegler’s latest remarks make one thing clear: she is standing by who she is and speaking openly about the personal toll of online backlash.
