ELLE Fanning is opening up about an unexpected part of her preparation for her new Apple TV+ series, Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
In a new interview, the actress revealed that she created an OnlyFans account strictly as research while getting ready to play Margo in the upcoming adaptation of Rufi Thorpe’s bestselling novel.
Fanning shared that she and the creative team wanted to better understand the platform and its culture as they developed the series. Showrunner Eva Anderson also explained that the writers approached the research carefully and responsibly, making sure everyone involved was comfortable before diving in.
The new series follows Margo, a young woman dealing with financial struggles after leaving college to raise a baby, while leaning on her parents for support. Michelle Pfeiffer and Nick Offerman costar as Margo’s mother and father.
Fanning is not the first star to use OnlyFans as creative research. Bella Thorne previously said she joined the platform in 2020 while studying it for a film project with Sean Baker.
Margo’s Got Money Troubles premiered at SXSW and is set to debut on Apple TV+ on April 15.
Why This Matters
Fanning’s decision to join OnlyFans for research highlights how actors and creators immerse themselves in contemporary subcultures to portray characters authentically, signaling Hollywood’s increasing willingness to responsibly explore digital sex-work dynamics in mainstream storytelling.
