KATIE Couric has publicly expressed her sympathy for Brooke Nevils, the woman who accused her former Today co-host Matt Lauer of sexual assault.

The veteran journalist praised Nevils for her bravery in coming forward with her story in a 2020 memoir detailing the allegations.

Couric told Page Six, “I feel terrible for her,” while attending a recent gala event.

Although she hasn’t read the full book, Couric said an excerpt made a strong impression on her.

Nevils alleges that Lauer raped her during the 2014 Sochi Olympics and again at NBC’s Today show offices.

Her formal complaint in 2017 led to Lauer’s swift dismissal from NBC, alongside other women who came forward with misconduct claims.

Despite the controversy, Couric reflected warmly on her own time at the Today show, calling it one of the best jobs in television news.

She described the demanding early hours as fostering a close-knit, familial atmosphere among the team.

Couric also took a moment to criticise Donald Trump’s treatment of the press ahead of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, highlighting what she called an “incongruity” in his behaviour.

She said, “The incongruity of a room chock-a-block full of journalists and this guy who hates them and insults them and yet craves their approval, it is going to be so weird, isn’t it?”

Couric’s comments bring a rare note of compassion from someone who worked closely with Lauer before the scandal broke.
