Key Points

  • Actor suspects fan backlash against Nate prevented his return to the film's sequel.
  • He felt disappointed but acknowledged Nate’s unsupportive arc might have resolved naturally.
  • Now promoting short film Self Custody on Amazon Prime Video, and floated a Nate spinoff.

ADRIAN Grenier is opening up about why he believes he was left out of The Devil Wears Prada 2.

In a recent interview, the actor said he was disappointed not to be asked back for the sequel and suspects the long-running fan criticism of his character, Nate Cooper, may have played a role.

Grenier starred opposite Anne Hathaway in the 2006 hit, playing Andy Sachs’ boyfriend, a character many fans later criticised as unsupportive and immature.

“We’re all fans of the movie, whether or not we’re in it,” he said.

“Obviously, it was a disappointment that I didn’t get the call to be in the sequel, but I also understand there’s some backlash with Nate, the character, so that might have something to do with it.

“But I think that just leaves room for a spinoff.”

Looking back, Grenier said he has come to understand that perspective, admitting Nate was often selfish and failed to support Andy’s career, according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.

Even so, Grenier said he would have loved to return for the sequel, which is set to bring back Hathaway as Andy Sachs and Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly.

While he acknowledged Nate’s storyline may have already reached its natural end in the original film, he still called missing out on the sequel a disappointment.

The actor also floated a fun idea for the future: a Nate-centred spinoff. For now,

Grenier is focused on his new short film, Self Custody, which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Why This Matters

Grenier’s comments show how fan backlash can influence casting and a character’s legacy, illustrating audience power in franchise decisions and why actors must pivot creatively — considering spinoffs or new projects like his Amazon Prime short.
