BILLIE Eilish has lifted the lid on the deeply personal reasons behind her trademark baggy fashion.

The 24-year-old Grammy winner admitted her oversized outfits originally came from a ‘really, really toxic relationship’ with her body.

“I had a lot of eating issues. I remember putting on, like, a big shirt and the relief that I felt,” she told ELLE.

Billie’s style has since evolved, influenced by hip-hop culture and artists like Missy Elliott and Tyler, The Creator.

She revealed her look was tied to wanting to reject femininity, explaining, “This is the misogyny that we all have within us…which is that I didn’t want to be seen as feminine, and therefore weak.

“It’s not right. I’ve found a good way of not feeling like that.”

Her body image struggles began young, around age 11, when she became obsessed with the one-size-fits-all brand Brandy Melville — a phase that made her feel excluded due to her shape.

“I wasn’t slim,” Billie said.

“Also, I was in ballet, and that’s this whole world of body problems.”

Turning to baggy clothes gave her comfort and a way to separate her identity from her body.

“I didn’t want my body to be part of my outfit.

I wanted my outfit to be my outfit, and my body happens to be inside it.”

During her ‘Happier Than Ever’ era, Billie flipped the script with a full-on feminine makeover in response to critics who claimed she “doesn’t look like a girl.”

“Classic me, I had to go with the completely extreme version of it,” she said, describing her pink nails, blonde hair, and dresses.

Ultimately, Billie reclaimed her image on her own terms.

“I was just like, ‘F-ck you guys. I can do whatever I want. And then I can go back to what I was doing before, and you guys can eat it.'”
