Key Points

  • Met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a personal visit, signaling continued public support
  • Longtime Ukraine ally; previously co-directed a 2023 documentary about Zelensky’s wartime rise
  • Planned travel to eastern front lines, making the trip a high-profile act of solidarity

FRESH off his latest Oscar win, Sean Penn made headlines by skipping the ceremony and traveling to Kyiv instead.

The actor, who won best supporting actor for “One Battle After Another,” met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday in a show of support for Ukraine.

“We can say that he’s in Ukraine, but it’s his personal visit; that’s how he sees it, that he needs to be in Ukraine,” a senior Ukrainian official told AFP.

“He just wants to support Ukraine.”

Penn has been a longtime supporter of the country and has visited multiple times since the war began.

Zelensky praised the actor on social media, calling him a “true friend of Ukraine” and thanking him for standing with the country since the start of the full-scale war, according to France24.

The visit also continues Penn’s close connection to Ukraine through film. He co-directed a 2023 documentary about Zelensky’s rise from comedian to wartime leader, and the pair have remained publicly supportive of one another.

Reports also said Penn was planning to travel closer to the front lines in eastern Ukraine.

The actor’s decision to trade Hollywood’s biggest night for a visit to Kyiv turned his Oscar weekend into a powerful show of solidarity.

Why This Matters

Penn's choice to skip the Oscars and visit Kyiv turned celebrity acclaim into direct solidarity, amplifying global attention for Ukraine, reinforcing cultural diplomacy, and illustrating how high-profile figures can shape public discourse, humanitarian support, and morale during wartime.
