Bruce Willis’ Family Opens Up on His Hidden Battle with Dementia

Key Points
- Aphasia diagnosis in early 2022 was later confirmed as frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
- Anosognosia prevents Willis from recognizing or being aware of his illness.
- Family moved him to 24/7 care, adapting routines while maintaining close, supportive bonds.
BRUCE Willis’ family has revealed the heartbreaking reality behind the actor’s health struggles, as he battles frontotemporal dementia without even realising it.
Emma Heming, Willis’s wife of 16 years, recounted how their romance began nearly two decades ago at a Hollywood gym before sharing the devastating diagnosis that followed years later.
She explained that Bruce was first diagnosed with aphasia in early 2022, a language disorder that was later confirmed to be part of a more serious condition – frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
Heming, Radar reports, described FTD as “the worst of the worst” forms of dementia, a cruel disease that slowly damages the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes, affecting behaviour and communication.
What makes Bruce’s situation even more poignant is that he is unaware of his diagnosis due to a neurological condition called anosognosia, which prevents him from recognising his own illness.
Emma said, “The blessing and the curse of this is that Bruce never tapped in – he never connected the dots that he had this disease.
And I’m really happy about that.
I’m really happy that he doesn’t know about it.” Despite his condition, Bruce remains present with his family, connecting with Emma, their two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, and his three daughters from his previous marriage to Demi Moore.
Emma shared that their relationship has adapted: “You just learn how to adapt to it and meet them where they’re at.” Last summer, Emma made the tough decision to move Bruce into a second home with 24/7 care, prioritising both his wellbeing and the stability of their children.
She revealed, “I see our children are thriving – and so is Bruce, and that is the most important.” The family continues to cherish their moments together, holding hands, cuddling and watching TV, while facing the daily challenges of Bruce’s decline with quiet strength.
Demi Moore remains closely involved, visiting regularly and supporting the blended family through this difficult time.
Bruce Willis’s fight may be largely out of the spotlight, but the love and resilience of those around him shine through every step of the way.
