Just three days after the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the Prince and Princess of Wales made a polished return to the EE BAFTA Film Awards — and pointedly ignored a question about whether the monarchy is “in peril.”
Appearing at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday night, Prince William, 43, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, 44, walked the red carpet together for the first time in three years. Cameras flashed. The carpet was briefly shut down for their arrival. But when one attendee called out, “Is the monarchy in peril?” the couple offered no response and continued inside.
An onlooker told Pop Quest: “Kate and William dodged the questions like the professionals they are. They truly kept calm and carried on.
“Nothing was going to ruin their night! They made their country proud.”
A Glamorous Return
William opted for a burgundy velvet evening jacket by Giorgio Armani, paired with black trousers and classic black tie. Kate re-wore a blush, floor-length Gucci gown first seen at the 100 Women in Finance Philanthropic Initiatives gala in 2019. She completed the look with dangling earrings, a small clutch and her hair styled in loose curls.
The outing marked their first joint BAFTA appearance since 2023. William attended alone in 2024, expressing regret at the time that Kate was unable to join him during her cancer treatment.
In his capacity as President of BAFTA, William is scheduled to present the Academy’s highest honour, the BAFTA Fellowship, to Dame Donna Langley. The ceremony is hosted by Alan Cumming, with performances from Jessie Ware and K-Pop Demon Hunters.
The Arrest That Shook the Palace
Their appearance came at the end of a turbulent week for the royal family.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on February 19 at Wood Farm in Sandringham on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He is accused of forwarding confidential trade documents to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a British trade envoy.
The arrest followed a report to Thames Valley Police by anti-monarchy campaigner Graham Smith. If convicted, Andrew could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Hours after his release from Aylsham Police Station, he was photographed appearing distressed in the back seat of a vehicle as he attempted to avoid cameras.
In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, King Charles III said he learned of the news “with the deepest concern,” adding: “The law must take its course… It would not be right for me to comment further.”
Business as Usual?
Despite the controversy, royal duties have continued.
Just a day before the BAFTAs, Kate attended the England vs Ireland Six Nations match in London in her role as Patron of the Rugby Football Union. She was seen smiling in the stands beside injured England player Fin Baxter, wearing a navy suit and England scarf.
Meanwhile, King Charles carried out engagements at London Fashion Week hours after the arrest broke. Queen Camilla attended a concert, and Princess Anne continued a planned prison visit.
It is believed William and Kate spent much of the week at their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, with their children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — who are currently on school break. The property is located just miles from where Andrew was detained.
On Sunday night, however, the focus was on film, fashion and flashing bulbs — not family scandal.
