Victoria Beckham Loses Trademark Battle Over VB Initials to US Handbag Brand
Key Points
VICTORIA Beckham has suffered a setback after losing a legal fight against US luxury handbag brand Vera Bradley over the use of the initials VB.
The fashion icon’s team tried to stop Vera Bradley from registering the letters, arguing that Victoria Beckham is globally recognised by her initials, which form the basis of her beauty brand logo, The Sun’s Bizarre column reports.
Despite hiring top LA intellectual property lawyers, Victoria Beckham Ltd eventually dropped the case, allowing Vera Bradley’s trademark application to be processed and registered.
The US Patent and Trademark Office confirmed the decision, noting the withdrawal of opposition from Beckham’s side.
Vera Bradley is a major player in the luxury handbag market, pulling in over £200million a year with high-profile customers including Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker.
This isn’t the first time Victoria has faced such challenges; she lost a similar battle in Norway last year and settled a trademark dispute with an Australian company in 2020.
The defeat marks another twist in Victoria’s ongoing efforts to protect her brand internationally, highlighting the complexities celebrities face in trademark law.
For now, Vera Bradley retains exclusive rights to the VB initials in the US handbag market, leaving Beckham’s team to reconsider their next move.
