Why They're In The News
PRUE Leith is opening up about why she decided to leave The Great British Bake Off after nine years on the beloved series.
The 86-year-old TV judge revealed that concerns about her balance and mobility played a part in her decision to step away.
Speaking candidly, Prue said she has become less steady on her feet and found some of the show’s more energetic moments harder to manage, especially when filming on uneven ground.
She recalled realising there were certain things she no longer felt comfortable doing, marking a turning point in her time on the show.
“I think the thing I found worrying is that I’m not very steady on my pins any more – not as good as I were,” she said.
“We weren’t judging cake – they wanted us to dance round this field.
“And it was a very hummocky, uneven, field, which of course Noel could really leap over brilliantly and Paul perfectly good.
“But I suddenly realised ‘I’m going to go A over T, you know, this is going to be humiliating beyond belief’
“So I said ‘I don’t want to do it’, and they understood – they were fine.
“And that was the first time I had to say ‘I can’t do that’.
“Gradually there had been more and more of those things.”
Earlier this year, Prue announced she would be leaving Bake Off, also sharing that she wants to spend more time enjoying her garden and traveling around Europe.
In her farewell, she described the show as a fabulous part of her life and said she felt lucky to have been part of it.
Bake Off producers praised Prue for her warmth, expertise, and humour, saying she will always hold a special place in the heart of the show. Reports also suggest that Nigella Lawson is set to join the panel as her replacement.
Prue joined The Great British Bake Off in 2017, taking over from Mary Berry, and became a fan favorite alongside Paul Hollywood, Noel Fielding, and Alison Hammond.
Why This Matters
Leith’s candid explanation spotlights the realities of ageing in public life, reminding viewers that health and dignity come first; her departure reshapes a beloved show's dynamic and sparks broader conversations about accessibility, safety and respect for older performers.
