MICHELLE Obama is opening up about married life with Barack Obama as the longtime couple adjusts to life as empty nesters.
Speaking on the March 11 episode of her IMO podcast, Michelle said she and the former president are “navigating a new phase” now that daughters Malia and Sasha are grown and out of the house.
Michelle described the moment as a rediscovery period for both of them, saying they are learning who they are individually and as partners after years of parenting and public service.
“Our kids are grown. They’re out. We’re looking at each other like, ‘Hey, I remember you,'” she said.
“I think it’s a new phase for us, which takes time.
“My husband did the hardest job.
“He reached the top of the thing you could do. Now he’s got work to do, individual work to figure out, ‘Where am I gonna be? What do I wanna say? Who do I want to be?'”
She noted that Barack is also figuring out what this next stage of life looks like after his time in the White House.
The former first lady also reflected on the realities of long-term relationships, saying every stage of marriage comes with adjustments and occasional bumps.
