JOSS Stone has given a candid take on today’s music business – and unveiled a soulful new collaboration.
The singer has teamed up with Conner Reeves for a duet version of his track “Slow Lightning,” featured on the deluxe edition of his album Ten Thousand Days and the Church of Restoration, due out April 17.
While celebrating the new release, Joss opened up about how tough it has become for artists to earn money from their songs.
She said live performances remain the main way she makes income, pointing to streaming and digital platforms as major changes in the industry.
Even so, Stone acknowledged that the modern landscape gives independent artists more freedom to build careers without relying on record labels, according to The Sun.
“All I know is that I need to book some gigs and sing into that microphone as the rest I don’t understand,” she said.
“If an artist isn’t getting signed by a label, so what? They can go out there and make their own career.
“As long as they have great work ethic and the will and the energy and the time to make all that content, then they can without asking a label to believe in them. And I think that is a big freedom.
“But I don’t know how the hell they are doing it.
“It’s all computer based and as you can tell – have been knocked off this call three times – it is not my thing, but I am glad it is happening for people that do get it as then they can be free and be heard.
Conner Reeves praised Stone’s natural fit for the song, saying her soulful tone and delivery made her the perfect choice for the duet.
He also teased that more music is on the horizon, revealing he already has enough material for another album.
The new duet marks an exciting return for Stone and adds fresh momentum to Reeves’ latest project, even as both artists reflect on the challenges and opportunities of the evolving music world.
