JOHN Travolta has revealed the story behind his striking beret and glasses look at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The 72-year-old star told CNN he was paying tribute to old-school film directors by adopting their signature style.

“The old school directors wore berets and the glasses and I thought, ‘That’s what I’m doing,’” Travolta explained.

He added that after decades in the movie business, he wanted to ‘play the part of a director’ this time around.

Travolta said he researched director photos from the 1920s through the 1960s to nail the look and make it an homage.

“So I’m gonna play the part of being a director and then when I look back, I’ll know, ‘Oh that was Propeller One-Way Night Coach, that was Cannes, that’s when I won the Pale d’Or,’” he said.

The Grease icon debuted his first beret and thin gold-rimmed glasses at the Karma premiere on May 15, pairing the look with a crisp white shirt and black vest.

He switched to a black beret and dark-rimmed circular glasses the next day for the Propeller One-Way Night Coach photocall, completing the outfit with a suede top and Chelsea boots.

Travolta’s Cannes style clearly nods to cinematic history, blending classic director flair with his own star power.

It’s a neat career moment, showing the actor stepping into a new role both on and off screen.
