JESSIE J has revealed she auditioned to star in the Wicked movie — but was beaten to the role by fellow Brit Cynthia Erivo.

The Price Tag hitmaker made the revelation yesterday, during BBC Radio 2’s Piano Room Month.

Jessie performed three songs — and she closed her set with an amazing rendition of Defying Gravity that’ll no doubt make producers regret their decision to cast Cynthia. You can watch Jessie’s performance here on Radio 2’s YouTube channel.

Why This Matters

Jessie J's revelation underscores pop stars' crossover appeal and her vocal resilience after injury, reigniting fan debate over casting choices for Wicked while highlighting the industry's appetite for powerhouse singers in major musical films.

During a chat with host Vernon Kay Jessie revealed she was keen to star alongside Ariana Grande‘s Glinda.

“I auditioned for Wicked the film and I got quite close to the end – I was really proud of myself. I’ve always wanted to sing the song publicly,” she said.

Jessie also revealed that her larynx once moved out of place following a car accident — but she was able to restore her voice to its natural state thanks to intensive vocal therapy.

For those of you old enough to remember — Jessie and Ariana have worked together before, alongside Nicki Minaj, on the (2014!) song Bang Bang.
