Charlize Theron Slams Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Reckless’ Ballet Remarks
Key Points
CHARLIZE Theron has fired back at Timothée Chalamet over his controversial comments about ballet and opera.
The Monster star, who trained in ballet herself, branded Chalamet’s remarks “very reckless” in a recent New York Times interview.
Dancers, she said, are “superheroes” who endure immense physical hardship in silence.
“That was a very reckless comment on an art form, two art forms, that we need to lift up constantly because, yes, they do have a hard time,” she added.
Theron didn’t hold back, saying: “In 10 years, A.I. is going to be able to do Timothée’s job, but it will not be able to replace a person on a stage dancing live. And we shouldn’t [expletive] on other art forms.”
She described ballet as borderline abusive, recalling how she suffered blood infections from blisters that never healed.
“I’m literally talking about bleeding through your shoes,” she said. “You don’t get a day off.”
Theron concluded by saying dance taught her discipline, structure, hard work and toughness.
“There’s no other option, you keep going.”
The row stems from Chalamet’s remarks in February, where he admitted he didn’t “want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’”
He added, “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there … I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I’m taking shots for no reason.”
His comments sparked backlash from stars including ballet legend Misty Copeland and filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who defended the enduring power of ballet and opera.
Chalamet has yet to respond to Theron’s latest remarks, leaving the simmering feud between two of Hollywood’s biggest names very much alive.
