Why This Matters
Why this matters: Davies' mid-show withdrawal spotlights performers' health and industry pressures, underscoring the vital role of understudies and fan support while prompting conversations about burnout and demanding schedules for high-profile stage actors.
AMBER Davies has temporarily stepped away from Legally Blonde: The Musical after falling ill during a performance, with understudy Hannah Lowther stepping into the lead role of Elle Woods mid-show.
Davies later shared an update on Instagram, explaining that after speaking with her doctor and taking antibiotics, continuing to perform while recovering was slowing her progress.
She said she has been dealing with a lingering illness for around a month and felt it was best to take more time off rather than keep pushing through.
Davies also reflected on her demanding run of projects, saying her body was ‘fighting for its life’ after moving from Gatsby to Strictly and then into Legally Blonde.
Theatre fans praised Lowther on social media for seamlessly taking over during the performance, calling her a ‘superhero.’
The news comes after Davies previously addressed a viral clip from a preview show in which she appeared to lose her place in the choreography, responding with humour and honesty online.
Best known for winning Love Island in 2017, Davies has since built a strong stage career with roles in 9 to 5: The Musical, Back to the Future: The Musical, and now Legally Blonde, while also earning attention for her podcast Call To Stage.
